In October, Global SOF Symposium – Europe will open its doors to the European Special Operations Forces (SOF) community in Budapest, Hungary, for three days of discussion and collaboration on issues affecting SOF operations worldwide.

Organised by the Global SOF Foundation in collaboration with Clarion Defence and Security, the sixth Global SOF Symposium – Europe will bring together military, government, commercial and educational stakeholders to network, explore topical developments and do business in order to advance SOF capabilities, partnerships and confront global and networked threats, with a focus on European requirements and operations.

SOF Commanders line up

Based on a three-day agenda, the 2022 symposium will include keynote addresses, plenary sessions, informal round-tables and panel discussions on a range of topics including ‘the importance of Special Operations-specific funding’, ‘empowering SOF’, ‘growing SOF aviation’, ‘building the bridge between SOF, academia and industry, and the ‘impact of drones in modern warfare’.

Key to discussions this year will be input from SOF commanders on the need for SOF-specific funding and cross-national operations. SOF commanders from nations across Europe will speak at the symposium, including Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia.

The government-only seminar on Tuesday 4th October will begin with the Commander of Hungarian Defence Forces, Lt Gen Ruszin-Szendi, setting the scene from the Hungarian perspective. He will be followed by a panel discussion from Major General Tamás Sándor, SOF Commander, Hungary; Brigadier General Claudiu Dobocan, SOF Commander, Romania; and Colonel Vasileios Zotos, Section Head of Supply and Procurement Office, Hellenic Army General Staff, Special Forces Directorate, who will discuss the impact of SOF funding on operational commanders.

With the concept of joint Special Forces operations gaining traction in Europe, three nations - Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium - are pushing forward with plans for a joint SOF command. Major General Peter Boysen, SOF Commander Denmark will be joined by Major General Ron Smits, SOF Commander, The Netherlands, and Colonel Tom Bilo, SOF Commander Belgium, to share insight into the realities of joint SOF acquisition efforts to date.

Further exploration of the ideas and opportunities for collaborative special operations headquarters that would serve multiple regions and mission sets will take place on day two, when the full symposium opens. Hungary’s Major General Sándor will take part in a panel on Regional SOF HQ along with Brigadier General Branislav Benka, SOF Commander, Slovakia; Brigadier General Philipp Ségur-Cabanac, SOF Commander, Austria; and Lieutenant Colonel Miha Rijavec, SOF Commander, Slovenia.

The afternoon will see Major General Richard E. Angle, Commander, 1st Special Operations Command, U.S. Army Special Operations Command share his perspectives on the convergence of the SOF, cyber and Space mission sets for delivering success in today and tomorrow’s conflicts; followed by keynote presentations from Mr. László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology from Hungary and Mr. Jim Smith, Acquisition Executive at Special Operations Forces Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. Day three of the event will include a keynote speech from Mr. Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the Minister of Defense for Hungary and a senior leader conversation with Lieutenant General Tony Fletcher, Commander, NATO Special Operations Headquarters.

Disruptive capabilities

For the first time in 2022, GSOF Europe will feature a special Disruptive Technology (DisTec) Theatre, where speakers will explore the cutting-edge solutions and technological breakthroughs that have the potential to reshape the future of SOF worldwide.

Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th October will feature short, focused presentations in the areas of Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Command, Control, Communications, Computers (C4) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), autonomous systems and countermeasures, resilient communications, geographic information systems (GIS) and data analytics, concluding with miscellaneous capabilities.

Speakers are set to include Colonel Imre Porkolab, Director of Capability Building, Hungarian MoD; Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Michael Campbell, President and General Manager, Privoro Government Solutions; Rich Hart, Principal Professional, Customer Engagement/Business Solutions, Samsung Global B2G; Michael Grochol, CEO, Iron EagleX, Inc. and many more.

“The DisTec Theatre is a great opportunity to see where some of the latest technology development is heading, with a focus on capabilities that align with current SOF requirements, including those of the Hungarian SOF (HUNSOF),” Bradin said. “It’s where some of the most exciting conversations happen.”

Technology in the spotlight

The exhibition show floor will also showcase the latest capability developments from exhibitors engaged in the SOF sector, and make connections with attending SOF commanders, defence ministers, and serving military personnel.

With a focus on equipment the HUNSOF is seeking, the show floor will feature technologies including weapon systems, airborne infiltration, CBRN defence, battlefield support, soldier protection and survival, among many others.

Exhibitor Thermoteknix (Stand F24) will feature its augmented reality heads-up display system, the Augmented Reality Tactical Interface Module (ARTIM), and how it is already being used by the UK Ministry of Defence and NATO troops on the front line. The system uniquely fuses thermal imaging and augmented reality, enabling soldiers and special forces to use it during covert night time operations to improve situational awareness. The system also connects to Battle Management networks including ATAK, so that soldiers can access route locations, pinpoint targets and identify teammates – and all displayed via their night vision goggles.

MAG Aerospace (stand C40) will display a range of solutions including training, communications, and logistics solutions that assist in building partner-nation capacity, C5ISR Engineering and Integration Services, and turnkey Contractor Owned, Contractor Operated ISR.

Lilt (stand G21) will demonstrate and discuss its patented, USG and FVYES-deployed adaptive language translation technology, designed to help military forces overcome a ‘critical, persistent, and growing language gap’, Julian von Nehammer, Senior Director, Lilt Government, EMEA, said.

“Faced with an overwhelming flood of foreign language content and data in the digital age, the military simply cannot hire enough qualified, cleared translators to brute force their way out of the problem - there is no software in existence that can match the accuracy of a skilled human translator,” he said. “Recognising that fact, Lilt developed and patented the best possible alternative: software that uses neural networks to learn from human translators in real time while they work.

“This enables translators to increase their speed and output by 2-4x, expanding the volume of information available to decision-makers and shortening turnaround times for end-users.”

With maritime systems technology also a growing capability requirement for SOF, exhibitor JFD (stand C19) will be launching its Shadow Seal Tactical Diving Vehicle (TDV) at the event. Shadow Seal’s design enables the discrete and covert transportation of four operators and equipment on the surface, semi-submerged or fully submerged. Lightweight and portable, the system is ideal for rapid insertion of forces into the littoral operational environment by a variety of support platforms; and is powered by batteries and propelled by two directional thrusters positioned above the keel, enabling the craft to be bottomed out on the seabed. The platform is streamlined, easy to manoeuver and has an intuitive navigation system requiring minimal training. Modular and adaptable, it is able to integrate custom systems, software and weaponry to enhance its operational effectiveness.

Aviation welding decisions often begin after the easy option has disappeared. A component arrives from an aircraft system or engine assembly, and replacement stock is unavailable or tied up in a long procurement cycle. The repair order is no longer a routine purchasing task. Space geodetic parameter estimation software system distributors in APAC are seeing a deeper opportunity as reference-frame science, VLBI analysis and satellite co-location research become more important. These applications are highly specialized, but they underpin precise positioning, Earth orientation monitoring and long-term geospatial stability. VLBI remains central to global geodesy because it supports Earth orientation and celestial reference-frame work. NASA’s Space Geodesy Data Analysis Software System is a software suite for analyzing VLBI observations, including processing raw interferometry visibility data and supporting geodetic analysis.  This creates a narrow but critical software-distribution category. Users working with VLBI data often need more than a downloadable package. They need assistance with data formats, model selection, parameter estimation strategy and interpretation of residuals. Distributors serving APAC institutions must be able to support both scientific workflows and local technical capacity building. There is also the development of new software. A 2026 paper presented GASV, which is a Python-based package for analysis of VLBI in geodesy and astrometry.
